Tuning of kanteles
The 5-string kantele is usually tuned like this:
(The pitch may vary according to the size of the kantele and the player´s preference)


The 10-stringed kantele is usually tuned like this:


Rarely however is the kantele tuned so high. The key-note is determined by the 4th string. The usual custom is to tune the kantele between a -d2, when the key is D major. The key-note is usually c1-e1 (according to the kantele, its size and the thickness of the strings).

In the box kantele of the Perho River Valley (20-36 strings) the tuning is generally raised to a higher pitch (D major).Tunes have been played with kantele and violin harmonizing best in D major.
